Words like "energized, happy, passionate, focused, and enthusiastic" are often used to describe students at this unique private elementary school that offers classes from the pre-k level to the 3rd grade in the 2009-10 school year. Classes through the 5th grade will be offered in the 2010-11 school year, and each year thereafter a grade will be added until the children are able to walk out with a diploma. The curriculum is modeled after two states that lead the nation in education, and the customized learning environment uses methods and systems of teaching that are modeled after some of the best institutions in the country. Finally, an international spin is put on the program.
Starting at the pre-k level students receive daily Spanish instruction. Students in grades 1st through the 5th are offered a daily comprehensive trilingual program committed to global academics and developing technological, leadership and interpersonal skills. The emphasis and tone of the school embraces a caring, personalized environment where children are encouraged to recognize and utilize their potential.
At Lyndon Academy a love of learning is taught today so that the children are better prepared for tomorrow. The Future Is Our Priority. Lyndon Academy is a place, in the words of the SACS accreditation team that is "extraordinary". It is a place that energizes students.
Students are greeted every morning at the front door with a hand shake and a smile. The energy and love for learning are visible in and out of school. It is not uncommon for a parent to threaten their son or daughter with the idea that if they do not behave, then they will not be able to go to Lyndon.
Beyond the tone, differentiation exists in the delivery of education. Each student has a team of teachers. Instead of getting just the attention of one core classroom teacher, Lyndon elementary students get the attention of up to nine teachers. They are provided with a schedule that is similar to a high school student. This specialty style of teaching energizes students and provides them with the opportunity to absorb and retain more information. Teachers teach the subject they love and that passion translates to a love of learning for every subject. There is an incredible level of collaboration that provides each student with a more custom and caring educational program. This collaboration and team style of teaching also allows for more cohesion across all subject areas and provides for seamless transitions from subject to subject. No subject is isolated, and more content is covered in a year to allow teachers to expand on topics and venture into uncharted territory with students.
The standards of the curriculum are stronger than those of the two states that lead the nation in sending students on to college. In fact, the standards are advanced one year ahead for students in junior kindergarten through 8th grade. Then Spanish and Mandarin are added into the mix as part of the core curriculum starting in Junior Kindergarten so that students will be fluent in at least two additional languages when they enter middle school. Language Arts are an important part of the curriculum at Lyndon for two reasons. The trilingual program prepares students for the global market that they will enter, and more importantly it strengthens their critical thinking and problem solving skills.
