Sample of Elementary Performance Standards

Note: the following performance standards are just a small sampling of what elementary students will be able to accomplish. They may be used as key points of comparison for English language arts and math. In no way do these standards represent Lyndon Academy's expectations in their entirety for English and math. These expectations do not include Spanish, Mandarin, science, social studies, art, fitness, and music.

Kindergarten 

  • Read in a manner that sounds like natural speech
  • Listen and discuss text read aloud and read independently
  • Proofread writing to correct conventional errors in mechanics, usage, punctuation
  • Use narrative, descriptive, expository or cross-curricular writing
  • Know place values: ones, tens, hundreds
  • Understand the concept of fractions (1/2, 1/3, 1/4, 1/8, 1/10, 1/100, 3/6, 4/5, etc.)

First Grade

  • Identify, describe, compare and contrast plot, characters, and settings of fiction
  • Select a focus, structure and viewpoint
  • Be able elaborate using details and examples
  • Work with dialogue and quotations
  • Use regrouping to add and subtract double digit numbers
  • Know multiplication facts to fives

Second Grade

  • Discuss elements of genre
  • Write a report using two or more sources; use the internet as a third source; apply note taking skills.
  • Provide reports that include graphs and charts done in Microsoft Excel
  • Know multiplication facts to twelves
  • Multiply two digit numbers by a one digit number
  • Know division facts to 100
  • Perform long division
  • Divide with a remainder

Third Grade

  • Use opinions and reactions of teachers and classmates to evaluate personal interpretation of ideas, information, and experience
  • Construct sentences using appropriate subject and predicate
  • Write with subject/verb agreement
  • Types of Writing: Expository, Compare/Contrast, Cause/Effect, Time Order
  • Multiply three-digit numbers by two-digit numbers
  • Estimate quotients, divide with and without remainders
  • Divide three-digit numbers by one and two-digit divisors
  • Multiply and divide fractions
  • Write fractions as percents and ratios
  • Add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators 

Fourth Grade

  • Identify purpose of reading and adjust reading rate according to purpose
  • Use proper intonation while reading aloud
  • Write with respect to the age, gender, position, and cultural traditions of recipient
  • Make a presentation to the class
  • Explore Algebra - recognize and use variables
  • Learn multiple, commutative, associative properties
  • Recognize common multiples and LCM
  • Divide whole numbers with zeros in the quotient
  • Show, name and explore measuring of angles
  • Identify similar and congruent polygons
  • Use distributive property to multiply mixed numbers

Fifth Grade

  • Use knowledge of punctuation to assist in comprehension
  • Write a variety of informational pieces such as business letters, directions, news articles, summaries, and reports
  • Students will write an average of 2000 words per month across all content areas and standards
  • Write interpretive and responsive essays
  • Write expository essays, persuasive texts, movie and book reviews, and advertisements
  • Use both standard and metric units of measurement
  • Use divisibility rules, prime factorization, LCM, and GCF
  • Classify and measure lines and angles
  • Classify geometric shapes and calculate perimeters, circumferences and area; and measure volume of 3 dimensional shapes
